Mission

Sustainable Claremont engages people in education and action to create a more sustainable community – environmentally, socially, and economically — in Claremont and beyond.

Who We Serve

Sustainable Claremont serves more than 37,000 residents of the City of Claremont as well as the neighboring cities of La Verne, Montclair, Pomona, Upland, and Rancho Cucamonga, and the greater Southern California region.

What We Do

Sustainable Claremont achieves its mission through education and action. Our community-based programs seek to engage those we serve and alleviate environmental injustices. These efforts create sustainable solutions that conserve, restore and protect resources such as climate, air, energy, trees, food, water, and wildlife. Our programs and services include:

  • The C. Freeman Allen Sustainability Resource Center
  • Green Crew Urban Forestry and Beautification Program
  • Environmental Education and Community Engagement Programs
  • Community Advocacy

History

The City of Claremont Sustainability Plan, adopted on October 28, 2008, recommended for the formation of a citizen group that would work with the City government – independently but in cooperation – on issues of environmental, social, and economic sustainability. In March 2009, Sustainable Claremont was formed as an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We’ve been working hard ever since to see our community grow and prosper as a Green City!

Our Team Works Wonders

Hanh Duyen Nguyen

Resource Center & Community Engagement Coordinator

Hanh holds a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science from the University of California, Irvine. She joined the Sustainable Claremont team in the fall of 2021 after working at other non-profits in Southern California. Hanh is passionate about sustainable education and is excited to learn and share knowledge with others in the community.

Carrie Baldwin

Green Crew Program Manager

Carrie completed her Bachelor Degree in Language Studies at UC Santa Cruz. She has over a decade of experience working with non-profits, from outreach and events to natural history collections. She joined the SC crew in 2024, and shares the same sentiment as Michael Pollan that “tree planting is always a utopian enterprise… a wager on a future the planter doesn’t necessarily expect to witness.”

Stuart Wood

Executive Director

Stuart completed his PhD at Claremont Graduate University, where he researched the politics of climate change. After teaching at Universities throughout California and writing at multiple nonprofits, he joined the SC team in 2019.

Romeo Lodia

Community Compost & Climate Resilient Home Program Manager

Romeo studied philosophy and mathematics at Cal State LA. After reading numerous works by Kentuckian author Wendell Berry, he found himself enamored with the Agrarian Lifestyle where he feels he can put his values into action.
